John Sidney McCain III is born August 29, 1936. He is the United States Senator from Arizona. Sen. McCain was the Republican nominee for the 2008 U.S. presidential election. McCain followed his father and grandfather, both admirals in the US Navy. He became a naval aviator who flew ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.

In summary, McCain is a living hero of the US. Trior to entering politics, this famous lefthander was a captain in the U.S. Navy and a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
