Cellist Pablo Casals

Pau Casals i Defilló  (December 29, 1876 – October 22, 1973), a Spanish Catalan cellist, and better known as Pablo Casals, was born in Catalonia, Spain. He later became a conductor.

Casals was an ardent supporter of the Spanish Republican government. After its defeat in 1939, he vowed not to return to Spain until democracy had been restored. 

Casals made many recordings of solo, chamber, and orchestral music, he is best remembered for the recording of his Bach Cello Suites he produced in the 1930s.
